Miss Dorothy Hamilton was given a surprise birthday party at her home , Thursday afternoon, March 3, with sev eral of her friends and play mates present. Miss Ora Lee Dougherty re turned Tuesday to Queens-Chi cora, Charlotte, after spending the spring holidays with her mother, Mrs. Ora H. Dou gherty. Mr. Roby Coffey has been ill for the past tendaysinWaynes ville at the home of his father R. C. Coffey. Mr. and Mrs. Coburn DeHart had for their guests this past weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Rogers, of Candler, N. C. Mrs. Rogers is a sister of Mrs. DeHart. Mr. Don Burnette of Brush Creek and Miss Lizzie Burn ette of Bryson City made a business trip to Danbury, .N.C. this past weekend. Mrs. Bill Franks was a busi ness visitor in Asheville Tues day. Miss Lottie DeBord and Ger trude Ferguson returned to the home of their parents after their school closed Friday at Smokemont. TWENTY YEARS AGO Miss Lillian Bryson, who will graduate from Duke University in June, was at home with her parents, Judge and Mrs. T. D. Bryson this week. Mrs. Sara Gibson visited Mrs. Hill King, Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Battle had as their Easter guests, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Battle and children of Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Reagan and child ren of Qualla, and Mrs Ras Battle and son of Tennessee. Master A. L. Matthews cel ebrated his eighth birthday Easter Sunday. Miss Doris cassada, a student nurse at Mission hos pital in Asheville, spend last Sunday at her home here. Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Collins of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, vis ited Mr. and Mrs. Carl Collins last Sunday. Mr.and Mrs. Kermit Marcus and children spent Saturday in Asheville on business. Happy Homemakers Meet For April The Happy Homemakers Ex tension Club had its regular monthly meeting Monday night at the home of Mrs. Theodore C. Krenzke in Cherokee. Following a short business meeting, club members parti cipated in the first session of a ceremic workshop. This covered preparation of green ware for bisque firing. The second part of the workship, when instruction will be given in glazing and finishing pottery, is scheduled as part of the club’s April meeting on Thurs day, the 18th. Individual pro jects include nativity sets, ash trays, cigarette lighters, tri vets, and decorative figurines. Refreshments were served the group by Mrs. Sam Mackey and Mrs. Doyle Maxwell, co hostesses. Handicapped twins Sammy, left and Kenny Query, 10, are serving as 1968 North Carolina Easter Seal Children. Pictured here with State Easter Seal Appeal Chairman Jim Beatty, they are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Alex M. Query of Charlotte. They represent more than 3,000 handicapped North Carolinians who receive Easter Seal services. The fund appeal began March 7, and will continue until April 14, Easter Sunday. AROUND SWAIN COUNTY Almond Cline Winchester visited with ■ his mother and sister, Florence , and Rasnie Johnson, on Sunday.! We are sorry to report that Grover Harrison is still in; Swain County Hospital. We hope he will soon be able to go home. Saw Mill Creek ■ Jerry Whiteside, his wife and son of Lanham, Md. were the weekend guests of his brother, Troy Whiteside. The Saw Mill Hill High Teen’s held their March meeting at the home of Fred Winchester. The 4th Saturday Night Sing ing was held at the Saw Mill Hill Free Will Baptist Church, March 23. The Saw Mill Creek 4-HClub held their March meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Dills. Brush Creek Mr. and Mrs. David Burnette of Valdese, visited with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Don Bur nette, over the weekend. Aby DeHart entered Swain County Hospital on Sunday.' We are sorry to report that Hanson McHan has had to return to the hospital. He is in Swain County Hospital. Mrs. Wanda Nelson and Kathy are spending a few days with Mrs. Verlin Tabor, who is re covering from surgery. Mrs. \ Tabor was in the Swain County Hospital and now in the C. J. Harris Hosptial as reported in last week’s paper. Clyde Tabor and family, Blake Tabor, and John Nelson of Kingsport Tenn were visitors in the Verlin Tabor home last weeken. Mrs. Jemina Andrews and son, Wayne, and Mrs. Larry Coleman have returned from a trip to Winston Salem. Mrs. Andrews was visiting her dau ghter, Carolyn Ownsby.andson, Larry Coleman there. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Douthit and Mr and Mrs. Doyle Hamp ton were visitors in the Verlin Tabor home last week. Rev. and Mrs. Cline were at Dan Springs Sunday for the regular fifth Sunday preaching service. Mr. and Mrs. Butch Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Davis, Mr. L. C. Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Barnes and Girls were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barnes on Sunday. Grassy Branch News Miss Mary Bohan from New York, N. Y. was the guest of Mr.and Mrs. P. M. Brendle Saturday. Miss Bohan is having a summer home erected here on the branch. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Steven son and family left Saturday for a visit with her mother (Mrs. Parkman) in the Eastern part of the state. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hampton Belk's Advances On Swain Drug In Woman's League Only slight changes were seen in team standings in the Thursday Nigh Woman’s Lea gue after the week’s rolling at Eastgate Lanes. Belk’s of Bryson City won four from Parkway Restaurant and moved into fourth place, while Swain Drug won three from Eastgate Pharmacy and remained in thrid place with a 1/2 game lead over Belk’s. F & P won four from W.C. Tel. Co. and Bunny Bread four Kearfott #2. Skyland Textile won four from Kearfott #1 and Swann’s Snack Bar and Elea nor Ann Beauty Shoppe a 2-2 week. (Grace) Brendle left Tuesday for Los Angles, Calif, where she expects to spend some time with her son, Buddy. Miss Sharon Libich and Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Lowe spent the weekend with his sister and husband,Mr. and Mrs. Boone in Asheville. Misses Jodi Ann and Linda Morgan visited friends on the branch Sunday. Mr. P. M. Brendle attended an area and water-shed meet ing at Waynesville this past week. Hughes Branch Mr. and Mrs. Paul Griffin spend th weekend in Asheville with their children, Mr. and Mrs. Royce Griffin and Mr.and Mrs. Everett Griffin. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Revis and son, Larry, visited his mother, Mrs. Amy Revis, in Sylvaon Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McHan and Buddy Southards were in High Point over the weekend. Mrs. McHan’s mother, Mrs. Cling Southards, returned with them. Linda Southards celebrated her sixteenth birthday Sunday, March 31. Libby Breedlove spent the day with her. Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Cochran have started their new home on Hughes Branch. We welcome them to our community. Mrs. Lelia Breedlove of Neeamore spent 2 days with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Harvey Southards and family. Whittier Rev. and Mrs. Carol Lindsey of Hayesville spent the weekend with his brother, Rev. and Mrs. Bill Linsey and family. He was guest speaker for the Sunday morning service at the Whitt ier Methodist Church. Toot Hollow Mr. and Mrs. Edward Roberts of Hazelwood visited relatives in Bryson City on Saturday. The Good Neighbor Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. L. E. Brooks on Monday with six members present. The topic for this meeting was Poultry in the Family Meals, miss Deal gave a talk and dis tributed some bulletins on the selection and use of poultry. FoUowing the demonstration refreshments were served by the hostess. The meeting was adjourned to meet in April with Mrs. Grace Watson. Tom Roberts and Elijah Fortner Jr. attended the races in Atlanta on Sunday. Engament Announced Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Bridges of Alarka announce the engage ment of their daughter, Terrie Elaine, to Mr. James Earl Simonds, son of Mrs. Louise Simonds of Alarka. Both are sen iors at Swain County High School. A June wedding is planned. District Court District Court was held in the Swain County Court House Friday, March 22, with District Court Judge, Robert L. Lea therwood III of Bryson City as Judge and James H. Howell Jr. of Waynesville as solic tor. Lionard T. Swayney - Found Guilty of Non Support and sent enced to 6 months in State Department of Correction. Lee Craig - Unlawful posse ssion of a wild animal found guilty. Had to pay court costs. James Winslow Roland - Found Guilty of reckless dri ving. Had to pay Court cost. James Winslow Roland - Found guilty of posseion of Li quor for purpose of sale. Fined $350.00 and Court cost. Ledford Williams Wedding Held Mrs. Helene Ledford and Troy Cordell Williams were married March 30 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Phil lips of Bryson City by the Rev. Frank Parris. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.F. Crisp of Bry son City and he is the son of Mrs. Claude Williams and the late Mr. Claude Williams. The bride is a laboratory technician in Angel Community Hospital in Franklin. The bridegroom is employed by Maness Manf. Co. of Bryson City.
